Addiction Counselling Services
Far too frequently, people fail to seek or continue addiction treatment as their demanding work and family lives take over. In a busy, fast-paced city such as Melbourne it is especially likely that someone in need of treatment will neglect their recovery needs in the face of their other obligations. Unfortunately, addiction does not go away on its own, and left untreated, it gets worse. For addiction sufferers, seeking proper treatment is essential to regaining control of their lives.
In light of this, The Cabin Melbourne has developed a flexible, customizable treatment programme to fit any busy lifestyle. Using our own innovative Recovery Zones treatment method, our programme yields high success rates and represents the gold standard in outpatient addiction treatment. The Cabin Melbourne outpatient clinic offers the following services:
- 1-on-1 Addiction Counselling

Intensive Outpatient Treatment
Each client at The Cabin Melbourne receives a comprehensive clinical assessment to determine their treatment needs. Based on the results of the assessment, a tailor made treatment programme is designed to best address the client’s unique addiction. Over the 3-month term of a typical programme, clients will have the opportunity to select group sessions from our à la carte offerings in accordance with their treatment plan. In addition to attendance at 60 minute group sessions, clients will be provided with 50 minute individual counselling appointments one to three times per week. Evidence has shown that long-term addiction recovery is best attained by ‘stepping down’ treatment over time. As such, our clients are offered the opportunity to create a more moderate treatment plan after successful, completion of the initial 3 month treatment term.
We offer the following groups on weekday evenings:
What is Addiction? / Mind Mapping
Recovery Vision & SMART Goal
Mindfulness Meditation Yoga
Boundaries & Co-dependency
ABCs of CBT
Recovery Zones Groups
Recovery Vision & SMART Goals
Monday Evening 6.00 – 7.00PM
While much of addiction treatment is focussed on correcting behaviours and thinking patterns of the past, this group allows clients to put their minds to achieving a brighter future. Clients explore their personal core values and how they apply to the major areas of their life including their relationships, vocation, social life and recovery. Clients are guided to creating their own personal SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-bound) goals geared toward creating the life they desire. Weekly sessions provide clients with support, accountability and the tools they need to realise their optimal potential.
ABCs of CBT
Wednesday Evening 6.00 – 7.00PM
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is focussed on understanding the link between thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Clients will learn to identify, dissect and challenge problematic and dysfunctional thought patterns and control the impact they have on their emotions and behaviour. The ABCs of CBT will help clients understand how their thoughts and behaviours can perpetuate their addiction and teach them coping strategies to manage and alter destructive thoughts. CBT is the most frequently used and thoroughly supported psychotherapeutic technique in current practice.
What is Addiction? / Mind Mapping
Wednesday Evening 7.30 – 8.30PM
This group is centred around providing clients with an understanding of the complex disease of addiction. Evidence is presented regarding the nature of addiction as a primary disease as well as information on cross-addiction and a breakdown of the 12 step approach to recovery. Clients will be given an opportunity to use Mind Maps to describe their own addiction and its lingering presence in their lives despite practicing abstinence.
Emotional Intelligence (Process)
Thursday Evening 6.00 – 7.00PM
For most recovering addicts, self-medication with substances or compulsive behaviours has been the go-to method for coping with difficult emotions. Learning to develop intelligent responses to emotional stimuli is an integral aspect of addiction recovery. To be used in conjunction with CBT, this group focuses on understanding emotional experiences and teaches clients to fully participate in the emotional moments of their lives while avoiding toxic reactivity. Within this group, clients will mature in their abilities to manage their emotions and provide support for others.
Thursday Evening 7.30 – 8.30PM
Rather than viewing relapse as an event, it is more accurately described as a process which begins long before the actual relapse behaviour. In this group, clients will learn to identify the early warning signs of relapse and will develop an understanding of the three zones of recovery. Open, honest discussions and client presentations help clients to build and understanding of relapse triggers, slippery behaviours, destructive thinking patterns and toxic emotions that increase the risk of relapse. With this information, clients will be equipped to identify the recovery zone necessary for successful, lasting treatment.
Mindfulness Meditation Yoga
Friday Evening 5.00 – 6.30PM
Mounting evidence indicates that anxiety and stress can be effectively reduced through mindfulness meditation and gentle exercise. Through yoga practice and mindfulness training, this group promotes relaxation and a sense of self-awareness, helping clients cope with the stresses and triggers present in daily life. Our certified yoga instructors and meditation guides will identify the needs of each client, and provide tips to direct each individual toward finding their own personal sense of balance and centeredness.
Specialist Monthly Groups by Demand
1. Boundaries & Co-dependency
This group helps clients to gain an understanding of unhealthy relationship patterns, with a particular emphasis on co-dependency and additional discussions surrounding the concept of Love Addiction. Boundaries, boundary failures and boundary violations will be thoroughly examined and discussed. The underlying issues that drive enmeshed and avoidant relationships will be uncovered with an aim toward developing an understanding of how healthy boundaries can heal dysfunctional relationships. Clients will be trained on how to utilize CBT practices to promote healthy, functional, intimate relationships.
2. Family Group
Addiction affects the whole family, and lasting recovery has been shown to have a much higher chance of success with involvement and support of the family unit. This group allows family members of individuals suffering from addiction to participate in the recovery process, while also helping them to understand the complex disease of addiction, and work on their own healing in the process. This supportive and educational group is designed to heal relationships damaged by addiction, help loved ones maintain their resilience in the face of recovery challenges, and cope with the stressors encountered in addiction recovery.
3. Relapse Prevention Continuing Care Group
Catering to those who have entered later stages of recovery, this group offers clients the opportunity to share recovery experiences, aftercare plans, sobriety goals and discuss the challenges they have faced in maintaining recovery within the context of their regular environments. Although these sessions are facilitated by a counsellor, they are largely client driven, with clients encouraged to actively participate in bringing forward any issues relevant to their own personal recovery experience. These groups are highly variable with some sessions involving specific education pieces and others open for client suggestions.
